Our Process

Residential Code of Ohio requires all new homes to have air leakage and duct blaster tests completed prior to final inspection.

Air leakage and duct blaster tests are critically important for understanding the true energy efficiency your home. While not visible, losing air through seemingly invisible cracks and crevices costs home owners thousands of dollars each year. Especially when it leads to an unnecessary unit replacement for a heating or cooling system. A duct air-leakage test shall not be required where the ducts and air handlers are located entirely inside conditioned space.

Our technician will leave a sticker on the electrical panel with the test results.

Additionally, we will email you an Energy Efficiency Certificate (for you to send to the building department ahead of final inspection) and a general report on things that could be improved upon if we see any.

What is a Blower Door Test?

Blower door tests can simulate external pressures equal to a 20 mph wind hitting all exterior walls simultaneously. As the home is depressurized (or pressurized) a manometer measures in cubic feet per minute (cfm) the total amount of air that is being drawn (or expelled) from any unsealed areas of the home. The measured amount of air infiltration CFM can then be converted into Air Changes per Hour (ACH). The lower the ACH, the more energy efficient the home is.

Blower door tests can also measure the area of leakage.

The following process is used to conduct the test:

Install blower door in exterior doorway
Open all interior doors
Close all exterior doors and windows
Begin test and identify differential pressure
Complete building envelope differential tests

Following the final tests, a test report is created that indicates the amount of air exchanges through the building during the test. The results are in the form of ACH, or air changes per hour.

What is a Duct Blaster Test?

A duct blaster test measures the airtightness of forced air heating and cooling ductwork.
Our testing system consists of a calibrated fan and monitor that measures fan flow and interior pressure. Then the following process is utilized:

Adhesive tape is used to seal off all registers and return air vents
One register or return is left unsealed, and the calibrated fan is connected to it
Pressure is monitored within the ductwork as the fan delivers air into the system

Ideally, there are few leaks in the system leading to excellent air tightness. However, often times improvements can be made even in brand new homes.
